High end board
Date: May 4, 2009
Pros: Fast, High Quality, Energy Efficient
Product Use
Latest Game titles, video editing, graphics processing.
"I upgraded to the 4870 1G version and from the moment I installed it it has performed flawlessly. The graphics and system boost it gave my machine was really stunning.
A feature I like is the variable speed fan that increases RPM to handle extra heat load. It normally doesn't need it and runs very quiet. In southern Cali, since Jan (now May) the fan hasn't kicked up RPM yet.
If you have the processor for it (my AMD 9550 quad core does very well but is the next upgrade), this video card will let you just turn every visual setting to it's highest and enjoy the games the way the designers probably saw it. Unbelievable clarity and with "view distance" turned to high everything just looks richer. Since i've had it a while, this card has made some "older" games like top shelf stuff, really saved a few games from the dustbin.
Cons would be size, but I guess super computer components have actually shrunk quite a bit and considering what this card does it's worth loosing a slot on small form factor motherboards.
Also, the serious power supply requirements could make setting up two and taking advantage of the awsome graphics power available thru CrossFireX™. I suspect this series of boards will sell a few power supplies. That is my ultimate goal, 2 4800 series connected together with the CrossFireX™ connector but I think I have to get another power supply.
However, those two cons have to be taken in the context that this board is state of the art gaming hardware and if you want this power, you have to commit to your system. The results are soooo worth it.
long story short, if you are serious about gaming and want to take your rig to the next level of graphics clarity then get this board."

4890 Crossfire Action
Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features, Easy to Overclock, Energy Efficient Cons: just a tad loud
Product Use
For heavy gaming, I like to crank up the details and have awesome frame rates on a large display, these cards do that flawlessly.
"Well, where to begin with these cards...I guess I will start off with what they replaced and that would be a GTX 285, I did this upgrade incrementally and even from the insertion of the first 4890 I could immediately tell a difference in both image quality and overall fluidity of game play. One card easily handles everything I played and then just to add a little bit more fun I got a second one and hooked them up in CrossfireX, let me say without a doubt this setup is absolutely fantastic, even when the action is fierce these cards power right through it....overall I am very happy with my purchase and I feel that I have a solid product that will provide me with countless hours of fun, THANKS AMD/ATI!!"

Pros: Fast, Many Features, Easy to Overclock Cons: Part Failure, Runs Hot
Product Use
Stream movies to a 40" samsung, and play games and create advertisements in the office
"fantastic AA and high res performance. Would have been a great card had I not let the CCC Autotune burn up its ram during a test. I beleave the heat solution for the card to be its greatest weakness on what is otherwise a very solid board. I have to give the quality a poor vote due entirely to the cooling issue."

FAST and cheap
Date: April 13, 2009
Pros: Fast, Good Value, Energy Efficient Cons: no crossfire support in most games
Product Use
I use for Crysis Warhead, some HD movies and a bit of NFS Undercover.
"You need a fast cpu, good PSU and case. CPU bottlenecks performance of this card so get something like a 3.33 ghz quad core. For PSU I would use something between 700W and 800W. Without a gaming case my 700W OCZ ModxStream achieved 60c when gaming. The cooling capabilities of your case of choice must be good or you may have to tweak the fan settings about 20% higher. You don't need anything crazy but you need something like an Antec Nine Hundred should do the job very well. I don't know about quality but the card arrived in perfect condition and nothing happened after my 100c baking. This thing will do >40FPS in any game if you bother to tweak the settings and disable the stuff the don't affect quality. The value of this card is good as its performance is comparable to NVIDIA SLi setups that cost almost double. I really wanted to get a 1200W PSU and throw another 4870x2 in the rig but unfortunately, it doesn't boost framerates to be worth the extra money. I hope that ATi makes games utilize the 4870x2 better to make use of the 2.4 TFLOPS of power that nothing else on the market can acheive. The icard is energy efficient and it draws much less power when your're not gaming or anything. If you want one of these, I would reccomend a Sapphire one. Everything is excellent and beyond any expectations if the CPU, PSU and cooling requirements are met but the Crossfire setups are still not supported in many games unlike SLi. I know some people had problems with the drivers and software but it worked fine for my Vista 64 which is just about the most tricky OS to find software and drivers for."

Overheating Card
Date: April 4, 2009
Cons: Too Expensive, Part Failure, Runs Hot
Product Use
Mainly for gaming and HD movies, 720p mainly but some 1080p stuff and it works just fine doing that. But it keeps rebooting my system during any game I start up. It's a pain in the butt!!!
"I've always loved ATI Products, even up to my last card the X1600XT. But after purchasing the 4850 512MB Card, I was disappointed very much. Within my first week of using the card, it started overheating. My CPU is at 36 degrees celcius and my MOBO is at 38, but why is my video card running in the 80's when idle and nearly 100 or more when gaming. Not only that, but it reboots my system on a regular basis. I've returned the card and got another but still the same issue. I've got a Q6700 w/ 4GB of OCZ DDR2 Fatality RAM and a 750W OCZ Power Supply. I just don't like this card, I'm going to give NVIDIA a chance. Like they say, "The way it's meant to be played". I guess ATI doesn't care about giving their consumers a good product. Just rush it into the stores with a high price to keep up with the competition."

Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features Cons: no graphics preview
"Another top quality ATI product. Recently brought the ATI HD4850 1GB GDDR3 would highly recommend it for any person wanting top performance for a great price. only downfall is it seems ATI no longer boxes or has available for download the graphics card testers, showing what it is capable of with a video of ruby or what not. This can easily be accomplished by running a game however it would be nice. 5 out of 5 stars from me none the less."

In constant improvement
Date: March 14, 2009
Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features, 2 gb ddr5 !, be prepared to witness mind blowing visual effects, it improves its performance constantly, crossfire is getting improved also with new driver Cons: a little noisy while rendering hard, maybe other brands can offer a better quality, no bundle game included, buy a good case 4 this card with good ventilatio
Product Use
I use my ATI card for gaming 90% of the time...the other 10% some video rendering, internet...
"It's been almost 6 months dealing with this outstanding beast (powercolor ATI 4870 x2) and the more I play with games the more I convince myself I did a good choice. I put 3 stars only in quality because of Powercolor, the fan is quite noisy and the card also tends to buzz (like electric interference) a little while dealing with heavy 3D rendering but I read it happens with other brands too... It's my only regret...maybe a better brand like Gigabyte or ASUS have managed to make the card completely silent while rendering... Apart from that its performance in every game that have played so far is simply jaw dropping (Company of Heroes 1920 x 1200 Anisotropic x 16 Antialising x 8 and everything everything at ultra = more than 40 fps) Foremost ATI drivers constantly improves the performance of the card somehow... I have noticed improvements in Crysis Warhead (a game that is intentionally programmed for Nvidia cards) from the order of 30 % in only 6 months... I really recommend this card to everybody but specially to hardcore gamers that seeks outstanding performance at affordable price. Keep up the good work ATI !"

Date: March 11, 2009
Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features, handles anything Cons: Runs Hot, fan quite loud
Product Use
Gaming, home desktop , recording tv shows
"This car is amazing. Have been able to throw any game on it at high setting and no issues what so ever. It gets very hot which is a downside but ok if you have a fairly good case. The only other downside is that it is a bit loud
Games run brilliantly and are crisp and exact. I was a Nvidia die hard before this card. Nothing else comes close to price and performance"
