Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features, Energy Efficient

Product Use I built my new desktop not out of necessity, but out of a strong desire to continue gaming. Using this card only for gaming gives me what I need.
"Ive been a hardcore gamer for over 10 years. Having tried ATI products AND Nvidia products, I would highly reccomend the ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics card. Having cost only $100 and change, it is well worth its weight. I play the latest and greatest, and most graphically demanding games there are, and this puppy provides without question."

Great overall card (even for a Hackintosh) Date: April 9, 2009
Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Easy to Overclock, Energy Efficient, works in hackintosh
Cons: Too Basic, no mac utility

Product Use For video editing and motion graphics.
"I'm a Hackintosh user. That means I'm running Apple's Mac OS X on regular PC hardware. Although it's not designed originally for being used on a Mac OS X system, my ATI Radeon HD 3870 works great. I have virtually no problems. Although my TV-out doesn't work right now, I don't expect flawless performance on a "hacked" machine.

Works well and I'm pretty happy with it. My 8800GT gave me horizontal tearing in Mac OS X, but the 3870 doesn't, so that's a good thing. I haven't gamed with this much, but it seems sufficient. Don't expect to turn everything up to max on Crysis, but then again, who can?

"First thing I would like to say to those bashing this card because its noisy fan is that as we expect things to fun faster they run hotter, so the fans run abit more, big freakin deal!

Anyway...I bought this card to replace my X850 and I gotta say wow! Making this purchase was the best addition to my rig since it was built. When I first opened the box and seen it was a single slot version I was sceptical that the temps would be outrageously high, because i had pushed my X850 over 100c and it was a dual slot model. But the temps never seem to go above 70c even when gaming on max settings (ie Crysis, COD4/5, Tom Clancy's HAWX or Bioshock) for extended periods. Everything I've owned thats ATI/AMD has never really done me wrong. Every so often i see people bashing this card and I cant help but wonder why. It may not be able to compete with certian Nvidia cards but I'd take better quality over speed any day. I've even got family member or 2 to buy this as well.

Pros: Good Value, High Quality, Easy to Overclock, Energy Efficient, easy to disassemble/re-assemble for cleaning, runs cool even on oc configuration, separate heatsinks on gpumemorypower circuitry
Cons: Not Fast Enough, game titles prefer nvidia over ati, fan noise (at 100% duty cycle)

Product Use Gaming, PC Hardware Showcase, Overclocking platform, Test platform for gaming at 1920x1200
"They say that the 3800 series is dead in the water the moment it got launched. I say never underestimate a product until it has been marinated for a while.

My tech supplier recently sold me an MSI Radeon 3870 OC version (V120 model - 512MB GDDR4, PCI-E2.0 X16) at a sale price, almost too good to pass up.

I was doubtful at first because I knew it wouldnt stand up with the 9800GTX or with the 8800GT but I still gave it the benefit of the doubt.

What made me GET this product was its ease of disassembly for cleaning (In Manila, temperatures here average 25-30 deg C, fan vents often get clogged by dust and debris hence constant cleaning is a regimen for OC enthusiasts like me.) It has a separate heatsink for the GPU, RAM and Power Circuitry (unlike NVidia that's unified and one huge heatsink for everything). It also features copper heatsinks over aluminum which is far more expensive, and im impressed with the liberal use of thermal pads instead of themal compounds on the memory and power circuitry which makes cleaning even more pleasurable.

Performance wise, it blows off an OC'd 9600GT, but it still doesnt hold much competition to an 8800GT more so a 9800GTX.

I am not surprised because the gaming titles are biased towards NVidia GPUs.

But believe me, gaming is one thing, maintenance is another - whenever I pull out my NVidia cards to be cleaned (usually every month) I keep on saying to myself that ATI did a better job on designing the stock thermal solution which makes it easier to clean the PCB of dust and debris.

It also overclocks like crazy .. except that the fan noise becomes irritating once it hits 100% duty cycle. But we cant have it all. Fan noise is the least of my concerns during daytime since our place is noisy during the day anyway

But this 3870 is paving the way for me to upgrade to a 4850 and 4870 (to replace my 8800GT and 9800GTX respectively) and hopefully its soon.

ATI, thank you for designing the Radeon 3870's thermal solution that way. You made a geek that's into clean and green very happy.

Product Use I stay in touch with family stateside with internet communication, I burn DVDs, and game a lot.
"The card works so well that its hard for me to imagine how they can improve on it. At the highest settings in a 15 man RAID in WOW, stuff exploding and going off every where and this card never hesitates. AMD/ATI rocks...I can't even imagine how the new cards and CPUs can be any better but I know AMD can make it happen."

Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features, Easy to Overclock, Energy Efficient

Product Use I play online alot ALOT! and Built this new machine just for that purpose. I like this one so much I'm saving now to add another one. After all my motherboard can hold four.:)
"I built my system to replace a dell 8250 THAT had became out dated as far as tech. goes. So when i started I read up on all the new products. And decided to go with AMD/MSI because of the work these two companies have been doing together. My system is a Rocking Bombshell I can overclock it max in the BIOS 15% and still auto tune, which I have a different profile for each. Ok the system is a Ultra case, 650watt PSU, Phenom Black 2.6, K9A2 Platnium, and 4 gig Dominator 8500 Ram, a 1gig ATI Radeon HD 3870, plugged into a 22 inch View sonic wide screen. idle my temps 32-42 depending on the overclock. And when gaming rarely get over 49C and that is with standrd cooling fans. The HD3870 gets only 45C while gaming at max overclock. I did however add one 80mm fan to the dead area where the drive bays are to push out any build up of hot air there. this did drop temps in the case by 15C alone"

Kicking Out Nvidia Date: December 20, 2008
Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features, Easy to Overclock, slams all 8800 cards, 320 spus for future technology

Product Use Overclocked as far as it will go in ATI Tray Tools. Stays very cool (Sapphire version) and gets over 40fps in Crysis with 2GB of DDR2-800 at 1100MHz 5-5-5-15, Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 at 4.0Ghz on Air Cooling.
"It is hard to take on Nvidia these days when they sponsor companies and pay them to take time and design games the specifically use and make the Nvidia graphics architectures shine. AMD and ATI come around the block with much better image quality, cheaper prices, and better frame rates on their 3870 cards that Nvidia brings with their 8800 series, even some of the 9600s don't even come close to the 3870. Plus there is room for growth with the 320SPUs compared to the approximate 90-120 SPUs on the 8800 and 9600 series cards from Nvidia. It just so happens that ever kid out there sees Nvidia on their boxes and must go out and spend over $1000 on a 280GTX SLI setup when you can get the same performance for half the price from other competitive ATI cards. My midrange system puts out over 40FPS on Crysis (Nvidia Designed, Terribly Optimized Game) at 1080P HD resolutions. It just goes to show what sponsoring and advertising can do."

3870+3850 Crossfire Date: December 19, 2008
Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality

Product Use I currently use my setup for high end gaming and editing movied and converting video's. I use them with a C2D but look forward to getting a spider setup for the Phenom II
"I bought a new 3870 and got a used 3870 and now use it in mixed crossfire. Together they come very close to 2 X 3870's. I can play most games at high res maxed except for the obvious culprits like far cry 2. For the money it far surpasses my old 8800Ulta and I can't imagine spending what they want now for a new card. I have always been content to have upper to top end previous gen stuff at a good price."

Best bang for buck Date: December 19, 2008
Pros: Fast, Good Value, High Quality, Many Features, Easy to Overclock, Energy Efficient

"For the price that this unit cost when I bought it, this card has been the best performing card I have ever bought. It runs every game I throw at it in 1440x900 with every setting as high as possible with no framerate loss. Doesnt get as hot as the newest cards, doesnt need nearly as much energy from the PSU, and its not even crossfired! My Sapphire Toxic hd3870 even overclocks to the highest the ATi toolset will allow, 885mhz, 1335 Mhz memory and be stable. In a single slot solution!

Simply put, the 3870 is an nVidia killer at half the price.
